MLB Power Rankings
1 Rangers :
Josh Hamilton are ou kidding me? With 18 home runs the first 35 games,
he is on pace to surpass his career high (32) during the Rangers' 65th game on June 15.
The slugger just completed a week with nine home runs and 18 RBI for the top team in the AL West.
Losing two straight to the Royals propably didn't went over well in that clubhouse.
2 Dodgers :
The Dodgers completed a 5-1 week despite getting only four hits from hamstring-plagued Matt Kemp,
who after play on Sunday trailed in all three Triple Crown categories for the first time in 2012.
Can the Dodgers continue their strong start without him?
Fortunately for the Dodgers, they've built up a hefty six-game margin in the NL West.
3 Orioles :
Wei-Yin Chen has provided much-needed stability in the rotation thus far,
averaging six-plus innings per start and two or fewer runs in five of his six starts.
The Birds need him to maintain his momentum in each of this week's challenging matchups against New York (CC Sabathia)
and Washington (Stephen Strasburg).
Jim Johnson allowed his first run of the season against the Rangers last week and still earned the save.
Look at the Orioles now, and you have to figure Matt Wieters, Adam Jones, Wei-Yin Chen and Jim Johnson would be All Stars on July 10th.
4 Braves :
A series loss to the Cubs sandwiched between road sweeps of the Rockies and Cardinals is a bit odd,
but the Braves are playing excellent baseball right now. With their win Sunday, the Braves have scored the most runs in the NL.
Jason Heyward struggled on the road this past week, hitting just .206 (7-for-34).
But when he did get hits, they mattered. Four of his seven came via the long ball, as the Braves swept
away the Cardinals and some of the pain from 2011.
5 Cardinals :
Carlos Beltran leads the National League with 13 home runs and is tied for the league lead with 32 RBIs.
The Cardinals' starting rotation that was so good in April has sunk to the opposite end of the spectrum in May.
Allen Craig is murdering the baseball since coming off the DL.
NBA Playoffs 2012
Lakers - Thunder
With a 96-87 grueling Game 7 victory over the Denver Nuggets, the Los Angeles Lakers
have advanced to the second round of the NBA playoffs. The Thunder already swept the defending champion Dallas
Mavericks in convincing fashion and have been waiting
for their second-round matchup for quite some time (nine days to be exact).
While OKC is a team on the rise, the Los Angeles Lakers are widely considered basketball royalty.
With 16 World Championships and 59 playoff appearances in 64 seasons,
the Lakers aren’t fazed by postseason basketball
Celtics - Sixers
Boston entered the playoffs as the four seed in the East, and had to start on the road in Atlanta.
But after losing Game 1 of that series the Celtics took charge, eventually dispatching of the Hawks with an 83-80 victory
in Game 6 Thursday night.
Philly is the eight seed in the East, and was a considerable underdog heading into its first-round series with stop-seeded Chicago.
But after losing Game 1 the Sixers took advantage of the season-ending injury suffered by Bulls G Derrick Rose to eventually
beat Chicago in six games, ending it with a 79-78 win Thursday night.
Boston is in the conference semis for the fifth-straight season. Philly, meanwhile,
is making its first appearance in the conference semis since 2003.
Heat - Pacers
Miami Heat won the season series 3-1, although the Pacers won the last meeting (during Miami’s March slump) and in the second to
last it took Dwyane Wade heroics in overtime to get the Heat the win in a game the Pacers rightfully think they could have won.
The first two games Miami ran away and hid.
Big vs. small. Up-tempo vs. grind it out. This series is a contrast of styles and interesting matchups,
and if Heat fans think they will roll through Indiana like they did the Carmelo-led Knicks they are in for a surprise,
the Pacers are a better team and present a lot more challenges.
Spurs - Clippers
After having to endure an offseason in which various media sources dubbed the Spurs too old to compete,
the Spurs have come out with a vengeance.
Not only have they moved on to the second round of the playoffs, but they absolutely annihilated the Jazz,
a team that was supposed to expose San Antonio's supposed weaknesses.
The Clippers will be the next matchup for the Spurs.
While the Spurs likely will not win the series based solely on two specific players, their team is filled with guys
that could go off any given night. Kawhi Leonard got hot in Game 2 and swung that game in favor of the Spurs.
Manu Ginobili did the same in Game 4.
On this roster, literally everyone has the capacity to go off for thirty points any given night.
That same level of depth just is not present in the Clippers. Also, the Spurs have had the good luck of being
relatively healthy this postseason, which gives them a distinct advantage over most teams.
