Is there any doubt the beet time in sports is coming up? Check out what the next few weeks look like...
The 2018 Postseason is rolling. The difference between the leagues is stark: The Yankees won 100 games and still could not win the American League East. But in the National League, no team hit the century mark. It took only 90 wins for the Atlanta Braves to win the weak N.L. East. In any other year, the division series clashes between the Houston Astros and the Cleveland Indians or the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox would suffice for a satisfying A.L. Championship Series.
Having the best regular-season record is often a curse, as it has often meant little in the playoffs. But last year, the Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers met in the World Series in a showdown of teams with two of the best three regular-season records. The year before, the Chicago Cubs claimed the best record and ended their 108-year World Series title drought.
This fall, could that mean a Red Sox-Milwaukee Brewers World Series?
The NHL regular season began on October 3, 2018, and will end on April 6, 2019. The 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs will then begin a few days afterwards, with the Stanley Cup Finals held in late May to early June.
The 2018-2019 NBA season will begin on Tuesday, October 16. Two games featuring top-tier teams are slated to kick off the new NBA season in spectacular fashion. The Philadelphia 76ers will clash with the Boston Celtics at 8pm EST to start the season. Later on at 10:30pm EST, the powerhouse Golden State Warriors led by Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson will take on Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder in what could be a preview of a Western Conference playoff series.
The 201819 NCAA Division I men's basketball season will begin on November 6, 2018. The first tournament will be the 2K Sports Classic and the season will end with the Final Four in Minneapolis on April 8, 2019.

NFL 2018 Discussion (Last Updated: 10/10)
    1. RAMS (5-0), Previous rank: No. 1: Even the premier teams must survive the occasional dogfight, which is what Sean McVay's outfit found itself in on Sunday. No, these aren't the juggernaut "Legion of Boom" Seahawks from earlier this decade, but they sure as heck battled on Sunday, staying with the heavily favored Rams drive for drive. Don't look at this as Los Angeles playing down to lesser competition. We're talking about a divisional rivalry in the loudest stadium in the league. (OK, loudest next to Arrowhead.) Also worth noting: Jared Goff's wideouts were dropping like flies. And yet, the third-year quarterback piloted his offense down the field every time the Rams needed an answer to a Seahawks touchdown. Then he closed out the game by surging forward for a first down when McVay called his number on fourth-and-short from L.A.'s own 42-yard line. Put another way: 5-0 is 5-0. McVay: the anti-Jason Garrett.
    2. CHIEFS (5-0), Previous rank: No. 2: Now that was what Chiefs fans had been waiting for. Not Patrick Mahomes heaving five touchdown passes, Tyreek Hill going airborne to bake a circus catch from scratch or Travis Kelce owning the middle of the field. No, #ChiefsKingdom desired a defensive performance worth bragging about. While Kansas City gave up a barbecue pit's worth of yards, points are what matter. (Yes, forget about the fact that the most commonly cited defensive ranking is "total defense," which measures yards allowed.) Bottom line: Create five takeaways and you're almost certainly going to hit the winner's circle. And remember: These Chiefs came into Week 5 pacing the league in third-down defense. Of course, just when I get all jacked up about the K.C. defense improving, Justin Houston suffers a hamstring injury and could miss multiple games. Crap.
    3. SAINTS (4-1), Previous rank: No. 4: Wonderful night for Drew Brees and the history of pro football on Monday. The 18th-year vet now owns the mark for most passing yards in a career, ahead of the likes of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Brett Favre. Following New Orleans' 43-19 win, "Total Access: Endgame" debated the Saints franchise quarterback's place among the NFL's all-time elite. The knock against Brees is that he has won "only" one Super Bowl, whereas guys like Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning, among others, have earned multiple Lombardi trophies. Well, that's dandy (and overly simplistic), but if you are going to consider a quarterback's ceiling -- i.e., how many championships he's won -- shouldn't you also take into account his floor? When have you ever seen Brees play poorly, or be the reason the Saints lost? Now, have you ever seen Manning or Joe Flacco stink up the joint? That's why I can't stand the wins metric for ranking quarterbacks. If the peanut gallery wants Flacco in its top tier of all time, so be it. Must be nice to walk out on the field and know your defense will hold the opponent under 20 points. How often has Brees' defenses in New Orleans provided that kind of support? Brees > Roethlisberger > Griese > Eli > Flacco > all but a select few passers to ever play the position. Period.
    4. PATRIOTS (3-2), Previous rank: No. 6: Stuff got a little close for comfort there early in the fourth quarter last Thursday night, eh? The Patriots still carry their fair share of problems on defense, as Andrew Luck and a bunch of receivers who could only start for the Bills began producing in the second half. Then again, New England's defense merely needs to be viable, as the offense, all of a sudden, is virile. Josh Gordon brings an exciting vertical/red-zone element, while Julian Edelman reprises his role as Tom Brady's wubby. Then there's James White, lauded in this space multiple times before, and now finally receiving a bit of national due.
    5. PANTHERS (3-1), Previous rank: No. 5: Graham Gano should not have to pay for any Michelob Ultras for a while in Charlotte. Lindsey Graham should buy Gano a whiskey or two. (Oh wait, wrong Carolina.) Well, anyway, that was one of the most clutch kicks in NFL history. While not as long as Matt Prater's league-record 64-yarder ... like former record holder Tom Dempsey's 63-yard launch, this sucker won the football game at the gun. Bailed out the Panthers secondary, which allowed the deep ball to Russell Shepard that helped the Giants pull ahead in the waning moments. Speaking of, nice to see Eric Reid getting a start back there. He's been a solid safety since coming into the league in 2013. Welcome back.

CFB 2018 Discussion (Last Updated: 10/10)
    1. Alabama (6-0): This week, Nick Saban intends to rant about those annoying hipster beards and why so many nose rings on Starbucks baristas. Elsewhere, the Alabama machine drones on scoring at least 45 points (vs. Arkansas) for the sixth consecutive game.
    2. Ohio State (6-0): Dwayne Haskins threw six touchdown passes against Indiana. "I'm not going to lie, were probably still tired from last week [against Penn State]," Haskins said. If 49-26 is tired, what do the Bucks look like at full strength?
    3. Georgia (6-0): Does it matter the Dawgs haven't beaten a currently ranked team yet? Before you answer, all that is about to change. Georgia's next four games -- LSU, Florida, Kentucky and Auburn -- are all against ranked opponents.
    4. Clemson (6-0): Trevor Lawrence returned to strafe Wake Forest. More than that, the Tigers ran for 471 yards! Welcome back to College Football Playoff consideration in the Power Rankings, Clemson.
    5. Notre Dame (6-0): Not as flashy as Oklahoma. Not as good defensively as Michigan (which is No. 1 in the country). But the Irish are suddenly as complete a team as there is in the country. An undefeated season looms.

MLB Power Rankings (2018 Final: 10/03)
    1. Houston Astros, Record: 103-59
    Week 25 ranking: 1
The Astros held off Oakland and finally clinched the AL West, and have made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2004-05 and won back-to-back division titles for the first time since winning three straight in 1997-99. The Astros finished the season with a major league best plus-263 run differential this season, their best in franchise history. Last year's World Series champion team finished with a plus-196 mark.
    2. Boston Red Sox, Record: 108-54
    Week 25 ranking: 2
One year removed from posting the 26th-ranked slugging percentage in baseball (.407), the Red Sox bats turned up their power numbers, slugging .453, first in MLB. Much of this can be attributed to signing J.D. Martinez, but Mookie Betts reaching another level with his bat was also critical. Betts reached career highs in average (.346), slugging percentage (.640), home runs (32), extra-base hits (84) and steals (30). He became the second 30-30 player in Red Sox history with a stolen bag Wednesday, joining Jacoby Ellsbury in 2011.
    3. New York Yankees, Record: 100-62
    Week 25 ranking: 3
Gleyber Torres hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning Saturday to push the Yankees to a league record in home runs with 265, breaking the mark held by the 1997 Mariners. Torres' home run was his 24th of the season, falling one short of making him the sixth player on the team with 25 or more home runs, a mark held only by the 2003 Red Sox. New York will lean on its potent power offense in the AL wild-card game against the Athletics.
    4. Oakland Athletics, Record: 97-65
    Week 25 ranking: 4
The A's rebuild doesn't get the same touts as the Braves' or Phillies', but that's because it's less transparently the product of their farm system. Trades since their last postseason squad in 2014 brought in key players Blake Treinen, Sean Manaea, Khris Davis and Stephen Piscotty. Marcus Semien, another trade pickup, just put up a 4.3 WAR season at shortstop. And whatever the postseason brings, with Matt Chapman and Matt Olson contributing 134 extra-base hits in their first full seasons, the farm system is also providing some of their platform for future success.
    5. Cleveland Indians, Record: 91-71
    Week 25 ranking: 5
Skip the final win tally compared to their AL rivals -- everybody still playing now has the same number of wins. The Tribe achieved some of their big goals in September to prep for the postseason. Trevor Bauer pitched a trio of tuneups, Josh Donaldson got his bat going and Jose Ramirez looks as if he'll be fine back at second base. But lingering questions about what they should expect from Cody Allen and Andrew Miller from the pen, and from Jason Kipnis in center, could prove troubling.
