NBA 2019 Discussion (Last Updated: 03/15)
    1. Milwaukee Bucks, Last week: 1, Record: 50-17
    Pace: 103.0 (6) OffRtg: 113.5 (3) DefRtg: 104.7 (1) NetRtg: +8.8 (1)
The Bucks' runs of never losing two games in a row and never losing twice to the same team both came to end on Monday ... and in Phoenix of all places. That loss was more about the Milwaukee offense (with Khris Middleton shooting 1-for-13), but the league's No. 1 defense ranks 19th since the All-Star break, having allowed more than 111 points per 100 possessions in its 10 post-break games. This team could afford some slippage and still has a two-game lead over Toronto for the league's best record, having won the tiebreaker between the two teams. The Bucks have won or lead the season series against every team in the East except the Miami Heat (1-1, with two games remaining), but their only meeting with Philadelphia thus far was back in October, before the Sixers (who play in Milwaukee on Sunday) traded for Jimmy Butler or Tobias Harris. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid have faced each other just three times in their careers.
Week 22: @ NOP, @ MIA, vs. PHI
    2. Houston Rockets, Last week: 6, Record: 41-25
    Pace: 98.2 (28) OffRtg: 114.1 (2) DefRtg: 111.4 (24) NetRtg: +2.8 (11)
The Rockets have held their opponents under a point per possession in two straight games for the first time all season and rank sixth defensively (106.1 points allowed per 100 possessions) over their eight-game winning streak, with five of the eight opponents being teams with above-average offenses. Their win in Toronto on Tuesday improved the Rockets to 10-8 on the road against the 16 teams that currently have winning records, with Milwaukee (11-7) and Golden State (11-8) being the only other teams with winning road records against that group. The winning streak began with a win (on the road) over the Warriors, who are in Houston on Wednesday for their final chance to avoid a season sweep. The Rockets' four games this week are actually their longest homestand of the season.
Week 22: vs. CHA, vs. GSW, vs. PHX, vs. MIN
    3. Toronto Raptors, Last week: 3, Record: 48-19
    Pace: 100.6 (15) OffRtg: 112.4 (6) DefRtg: 107.2 (7) NetRtg: +5.2 (4)
It's been a relatively rough season for the Raptors' bench, and their loss to Houston on Tuesday may have been the nadir in that regard. Their starting lineup was a plus-17 in its 29 minutes, but the Raptors were outscored by an incredible 29 points in 19 minutes with at least one reserve on the floor a gainst the Rockets. Coach Nick Nurse continues to try both Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka in the starting lineup and the Raptors have been good as long as t hey have multiple starters on the floor. They have three of the league's top seven three-man combinations (in regard to on-court NetRtg) among the 258 that have played at least 100 minutes since the break. The Pistons have two of the top seven, and the Raptors will get another chance to beat their former coach when they visit Detroit on Sunday.
Week 22: @ CLE, vs. LAL, @ DET
    4. Golden State Warriors, Last week: 2 , Record: 45-21
    Pace: 102.1 (10) OffRtg: 115.0 (1) DefRtg: 109.3 (15) NetRtg: +5.7 (2)
The Warriors showed us on Friday that, when they care to lock in, they can suffocate a team defensively. In what was the Nuggets' worst offensive game (105 points on 104 possessions) in almost two months, the champs allowed Denver to score just 11 points (on 3-for-16 shooting, with seven turnovers) the first 10 minutes of the first quarter. Alas, the win over the Nuggets (which also came with Klay Thompson shooting 9-for-11 from 3-point range) was sandwiched by a 33-point loss to the Celtics and a loss (at home and with a rest advantage) to the Phoenix Suns. The Warriors have shot less than 25 percent in each of their last three losses and DeMarcus Cousins has shot 5-for-29 (the league's second-worst mark) from beyond the arc since the All-Star break. It seems that this team (even with the intrigue of adding Cousins to the mix) can only keep its regular-season foot on the gas for so long, but this week's two games -- at Houston on Wednesday and at Oklahoma City on Saturday -- might pique its interest.
    Week 22: @ HOU, @ OKC
    5. Denver Nuggets, Last week: 4, Record: 43-22
    Pace: 99.0 (23) OffRtg: 112.8 (4) DefRtg: 108.0 (11) NetRtg: +4.8 (5)
After finally getting healthy, the Nuggets allowed less than 97 points per 100 possessions as they won their first three games out of the All-Star break. In the three games after that, their reunited starting lineup outscored its opponents by 28 points in its 43 minutes. But they lost all three, because they were outscored by 44 points in 101 minutes with at least one reserve on the floor. What was once a strength (with Monte Morris and Malik Beasley developing into two of the best reserve guards in the league) became a liability. But the bench was much better than the starting lineup in their loss at Golden State on Friday (when Nikola Jokic registered a career-worst minus-29 in his 29 minutes) and the Nuggets still have 17 games to figure out if Isaiah Thomas (who has shot 37 percent in his nine games) can play in the postseason. They're still comfortably in second place, but have an important, three-game homestand this week, because the schedule gets tougher and more road-heavy after that.
Week 22: vs. MIN, vs. DAL, vs. IND

MLB 2019 Preseason Rankings (Last Updated: 03/15)
    1. Boston Red Sox, 2018 Record: 108-54: Boston will be looking to repeat as champions, which has Alex Bregman already ready for a postseason rematch. There is one glaring weak spot within the Boston roster, which is the bullpen. They have let Craig Kimbrel walk, although you can find rumors still linking them to signing him, but it seems unlikely unless it is a one-year deal. This is a bit worrisome, and likely will be the reason they don’t repeat. It isn’t quite enough to weigh them down a few spots, but after a few weeks we shouldn’t be surprised if Boston slips a few spots. The staff also registers as one of the better ones in baseball, and resigning Nathan Eovaldi was huge for their depth. Eduardo Rodriguez staying healthy and taking another step would be a major plus.
    2. New York Yankees, 2018 Record: 100-62: The Bronx Bombers lived up to the name last season, hitting 267 home runs as a team. Both them and Boston are World Series favorites heading into the season. New York has usually been a team to splash the cash, but they made smart under the radar moves that might end up being better than spending $300 million for Manny Machado. Adding DJ LeMahieu and Adam Ottavino provides infield depth and adds to an already impressive bullpen. Trading for James Paxton also adds another above average arm to the rotation, which they needed last season. New York has been on the rise for a while, but have been doing things a bit differently from the 1990s and 2000s.
    3. Houston Astros, 2018 Record: 103-59: Houston fell short in the ALCS last season, but their time is now. We can look at Houston losing some starting pitchers as a potential drop in wins, but starting out your rotation with Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander is going to be a plus. Lance McCullers, Charlie Morton, and Dallas Keuchel have either moved on or are out for the year, leaving three opening spots for Houston. They have some younger talent to fill in, and still a pretty good bullpen. This won’t knock them off of the AL West mountain just yet. The offense will look to get healthy versions of Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa this season, but adding Michael Brantley wasn’t a highlight, yet underrated move.
    4. Los Angeles Dodgers, 2018 Record: 92-71: Is there some concern with Clayton Kershaw? Sure, but the Dodgers are more than Kershaw. They had a top ten offense, which missed Corey Seager, until Manny Machado showed up for half a season. Los Angeles did trade Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig, but this was more trimming fat in my opinion. The emergence of Walker Buehler adds to a strong rotation, even with some of their aging arms. With a strong bullpen, and some younger depth, the Dodgers still have a quality rotation. Mixing it in with an above average offense, the Dodgers will be in the hunt to return to the World Series, but still seem a step behind the American League elite.
    5. Chicago Cubs, 2018 Record: 95-68: The Cubs caught some flack for not spending money on an over-performing and teetering rotation, which means they will hope for strong performances out of aging arms. The Cubs core is already so strong with their infield, and maybe we forget this was a World Series winning team just a few years ago. 2019 is going to be a telling year for what the Cubs need to address moving forward, mainly because the age of their pitching staff, and paying certain players. If some of the National League East teams make the step as expected, the Cubs will slip down the rankings a bit. The NL Central also is going to be a tough won to win this season.

CBA 2019 Discussion (Last Updated: 03/15)
    1. Virginia, Last week: No. 1
The Cavaliers have won eight straight, are 28-2 and figure to be a lock for the No. 1 overall seed regardless of any result that comes in the next three days. This is the best team in college basketball. We wait to see whether it beats the 16 it faces by 15, 20, 25 -- or 40.
    2. North Carolina, Last week: No. 3
The 26-5 Tar Heels are allowing 91.4 points per 100 possessions, according to KenPom's adjusted efficiency metrics. That makes this the best defensive Tar Heels team since 2010-11, when UNC earned a 2 seed. And at 74.7 possessions per game, this is the fastest UNC team ever under Roy Williams.
    3. Kentucky, Last week: No. 5
Easy call putting the 26-5 Wildcats at No. 3. John Calipari's team still isn't at full strength (Reid Travis' return is a moving target, it seems) but it still has one of the best defenses in America. It's also one of the most proficient teams at getting to the foul line; 43.6 percent of UK's attempts are from the charity stripe, which is top-six in the country. If the freshmen don't shrink in the coming week, UK shouldn't have much trouble making the Sweet 16.
    4. Gonzaga, Last week: No. 2
The Bulldogs slip two spots, now 30-3, after losing by 13 points to Saint Mary's in the WCC title game. What a weird performance. Gonzaga looked alien to itself. But better on Tuesday than in the first weekend of the NCAAs. In light of this, i expect Gonzaga to beat its first three opponents by an average of 17 points. Yes, you're reading correctly: I still have the Zags, minimally, in the Elite Eight.
    5. Houston, Last week: No. 6 The Cougars will have a gripe if they win the American tournament, finish 32-2 and don't get a 2 seed. I want to believe the selection committee will reward them in kind, but I'm not convinced. The Cougars' two losses have come by nine total points to two teams in the NCAAs as of today (Temple and UCF). Oh, yeah: Houston is fourth in the NET.
