NFL 2018 Discussion (Last Updated: 09/12)
1. Philadelphia Eagles, 2018 record: 1-0
Preseason ranking: 1
Michael Bennett wasn't a force in the box score in his debut (two tackles, zero sacks), but his versatility will help a deep Eagles defensive line throughout the season. He played 40 total snaps on Thursday, 19 at right end, 16 at left end, one at right defensive tackle and four at left defensive tackle. The Falcons gained 3.6 yards per play when he was on the field, and 6.3 yards per play when he was off the field.
2. New England Patriots, 2018 record: 1-0
Preseason ranking: 2
While playmaker Cordarrelle Patterson had just four touches in his Patriots debut, that was as many has he had in his final three games with the Raiders last season combined. Patterson also will be returning kickoffs for New England, where he hopes to add to his five career return touchdowns.
3. Minnesota Vikings, 2018 record: 1-0
Preseason ranking: 4
The Vikings gave Kirk Cousins the keys to the franchise (and $84 million guaranteed) in the offseason and saw some initial return on investment in a win against the 49ers. Cousins passed for two TDs and got a healthy Dalvin Cook heavily involved in the passing game with a career-high seven targets.
4. Los Angeles Rams, 2018 record: 1-0
Preseason ranking: 6
The Rams acquired Marcus Peters in the offseason to help overhaul a secondary that held the Raiders' wide receivers without a catch in the second half of Monday night's win. Peters had a pick-six, and he leads the NFL with 12 interceptions since 2016.
5. Jacksonville Jaguars, 2018 record: 1-0
Preseason ranking: 7
WR Donte Moncrief caught just one of his five targets for 14 yards in his Jaguars debut, the lowest reception percentage of his career (minimum, five targets). While Moncrief missed time due to injuries in each of the previous two seasons, he has been limited to one catch or fewer in five of his past six games played.
CFB 2018 Discussion (Last Updated: 09/12)
1. ALABAMA (2–0), Previous ranking: 1
This week: Beat Arkansas State, 57–7
Next week: at Ole Miss
2. GEORGIA (2–0, 1–0 SEC), Previous ranking: 3
This week: Beat South Carolina, 41–17
Next week: vs. Middle Tennessee
Even though it’s early September, the SEC East can almost be called at this point. Georgia showed it is still the class of the division with a thorough beatdown of the Gamecocks at Williams-Brice Stadium. Jake Fromm was his steady self with 194 passing yards and Georgia’s stable of running backs galloped for 271 en route to a fourth straight win over South Carolina. The Bulldogs’s remaining SEC regular season tests come from West foes LSU and Auburn later in the season.
3. CLEMSON (2–0), Previous ranking: 2
This week: Beat Texas A&M, 28–26
Next week: vs. Georgia Southern
Clemson knows it was lucky to escape College Station with a win, as Aggies QB Kellen Mond sliced up the Tigers’ secondary for 430 yards and three touchdowns. Texas A&M had to throw it because its running game was non-existent.
4. OHIO STATE (1–0), Previous ranking: 4
This week: Beat Rutgers, 52–3
Next week: vs. TCU in Arlington, Texas
The Buckeyes’ 900th win in school history came at the expense of the lowly Scarlet Knights, whom Ohio State has now scored 166 points against in the teams’ last three meetings. Quarterback Dwayne Haskins and his backup Tate Martell combined to go 30-of-33 for 354 yards and five touchdowns. On the other side, Rutgers managed a measly 134 total yards of offense. Expect a much stiffer test against TCU.
5. WISCONSIN (2–0), Previous ranking: 5
This week: Beat New Mexico, 45–14
Next week: vs. BYU
MLB Power Rankings (Last Updated: 09/12)
1. Red Sox (99-46; last week: 1):
The Red Sox have clinched a playoff spot. They’re closing in on 100 wins (just need one more). And they still have scored more runs than any other team. They’re legit. The next question is whether they’re built to win in October.
2. Astros (91-54; last week: 3):
The Astros are 9-1 in September. They still have best run differential in MLB and they’ve proven they can beat the Red Sox. If that’s a No. 2 team, you feel pretty good about being No. 2.
3. Yankees (90-55; last week: 2):
The Yankees are locked in as one of baseball’s best teams. A playoff spot is almost guaranteed. But there has to be some concern in the Bronx. Sonny Gray gave them another disappointing start in Tuesday’s loss to the Minnesota Twins. The team is playing so-so ball in September. Aaron Judge isn’t back yet. The bright side? Maybe they’re just getting it out of their system now instead of in October.
4. A’s (88-57; last week: 5):
As good as the Astros have been lately, they haven’t been able to gain much separation in the AL West. And that’s because the A’s — despite their pitching injuries — just keep winning. They’ve won five in a row and they’re 7-2 in September.
5. Brewers (83-63; last week: 8):
People started to count the Brewers out a few weeks back. They were collapsing. They were blowing it. Credit where it’s due, the Brewers have turned the ship around. Not only do they lead the NL wild-card race, but they’re getting closer to the division-leading Cubs. And, in head-to-head games, they’ve beat the Cubs in three of five games in the past 10 days.
