NFL Preseason Power Rankings (Last Updated: 07/28)
    1. New England Patriots: Did the Super Bowl LI champions really need to trade for 23-year-old receiver Brandin Cooks? Probably not. But Cooks brings a big-play ability that hasn't been seen in New England in a while. Cooks has seven career 40-plus yard touchdowns. The Patriots have nine total in that time.
    2. Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons have been fairly quiet this offseason, but the signing of Dontari Poe should prove to be a big boost to the defense in 2017. The Falcons allowed 4.5 yards per rush between the tackles last season, fifth-worst in the NFL, and saw an NFL-worst 46 percent of their sacks come from one player. Poe should help both fronts.
    3. Green Bay Packers: It's rare enough for the Packers to make moves in free agency, but to double-down on one position with the signings of Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks was truly unique. The Packers utilized multiple tight ends on the second-fewest plays last season.
    4. Dallas Cowboys: While we sit and wait for possible Tony Romo movement, a lot of other former Cowboys have already landed elsewhere. The Cowboys did sign CB Nolan Carroll II but will have to replace a bulk of their secondary after the departures of Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne, J.J. Wilcox and Barry Church.
    5. Pittsburgh Steelers: The big news in Pittsburgh revolves around its "Killer B's." Le'Veon Bell was franchised, Antonio Brown signed an extension and Ben Roethlisberger (who was considering retirement) is leaning toward playing in 2017. The Steelers are 28-14 (.667) since 2013 when all three play.

CFB Preseason Power Rankings (Last Updated: 07/28)
    1. Alabama Crimson Tide: Jalen Hurts looks to top his impressive freshman campaign. We know, we’re going out on a limb with this pick. Here’s why it is difficult to talk yourself out of giving Alabama the top spot. In an uncharacteristic move, Nick Saban went with freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts last season, and still made the national championship game. Hurts enters this season with a year of experience under his belt, and has a number of key receivers returning including Calvin Ridley. Alabama has 11 returning starters, which by their own standards is not as bad as some years. The Crimson Tide have a history of replacing NFL talent with more pro-level talent. This year should be no different. Alabama gets an early test to start the season against Florida State in Atlanta. It could be a matchup featuring the top two teams in the preseason polls.
    2. Ohio State Buckeyes: Ohio State will attempt to make a return visit to the College Football Playoff. Last year, the Buckeyes entered the season with skepticism since Ohio State had so many new faces. This year, Ohio State returns 15 starters making them one of the most experienced squads in the Big Ten. The Big Ten was once one of the shallower conferences in the country, but became arguably the best conference in college football last season. In addition to being tested inside their own conference, Ohio State faces Oklahoma the second game of the season. The big question heading into the season is whether quarterback J.T. Barrett and the Buckeyes can have a truly lethal offense.
    3. Florida State Seminoles: Deondre Francois is one of the best young quarterbacks in college football. An argument can be made for the Seminoles to be higher or lower inside the top five. Here’s what we like about Florida State. Deondre Francois had a solid freshman season at quarterback for the Seminoles. Francois threw for 3,350 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Francois showed promise last season, and it is reasonable to expect him to play even better during 2017. Florida State is also slated to have one of the best defenses in the country. The Seminoles have nine of eleven defensive starters returning, with a total of 15 returning starters on both sides of the ball. The Seminoles window to overtake Clemson once again in the ACC could be this season.
    4. USC Trojans: Sam Darnold is one of the top prospects for the 2018 NFL Draft. We get it. The USC hype machine is always running overtime in the off-season. However, there is reason to believe in the Trojans this season. After losing three of their first four games, USC rattled off nine straight wins, including an impressive performance at Washington. The Trojans started trending up after switching to quarterback Sam Darnold. USC not only found their quarterback, but a signal caller that is likely to be one of the first selections in the 2018 NFL Draft. While the season is full of surprises, USC and Washington should be the class of the Pac-12. Expect the USC offense to be prolific with Darnold under center, and top running back Ronald Jones II giving Pac-12 defenses fits.
    5. Washington Huskies: Washington was the surprise team of the 2016 college football season. It is a difficult decision choosing who to rank higher between USC and Washington. USC gets the edge given their dominant performance last season on the road against Washington. The only chance of a rematch this season would be if both teams advance to the Pac-12 championship. Jake Browning played through a shoulder injury last year, and his play took a dip to close out the season. It will be worth watching how Browning performs in 2017 after shoulder surgery. The Huskies return 13 starters from the team that made the College Football Playoff a season ago. The month of November will decide the season for Washington as they face Oregon, Stanford, Utah and Washington State.

MLB Power Rankings (Last Updated: 08/14)
    1. Los Angeles Dodgers (83-34): One thing keeping the Dodgers atop the league as they reach for a record-setting season in the win column, even with Clayton Kershaw on the shelf? Starting pitching, because their 2.39 ERA from the rotation since Kershaw went on the disabled list (with the Dodgers going 15-3) and 3.48 ERA from non-Kershaw starters all season are far and away MLB's best marks.
    2. Washington Nationals (70-46): The impact of the Bryce Harper injury may be contingent on just how well returning outfielder Michael Taylor plays. Taylor was hitting .278 with a .510 slugging percentage in a breakthrough season before suffering an oblique injury. Taylor's injury rehab took awhile and included a 2-for-30 struggle at high-A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg. But the Nationals may have been convinced that Taylor is all right by his 2-for-4 game with Harrisburg on Saturday night before activating him Sunday to take Harper's place.
    3. Houston Astros (72-45): While we wait and see what the Astros do about their problems on the mound and in the clubhouse, there are positives. Jose Altuve is cruising toward his fourth batting title (and a fourth straight 200-hit season) and leading the AL in WAR (6.5), while Alex Bregman is coming into his own at the plate in the second half, as his 1.036 OPS since the break ranks fifth in the AL.
    4. Boston Red Sox (67-50): The Red Sox are on fire. Eduardo Nunez has been amazing and Andrew Benintendi has been one of the best hitters in baseball after an extended slump. They keep winning despite the rotation struggling a bit lately as Rick Porcello's disappointing season continues, but Eduardo Rodríguez has shown signs that he can pick up the slack come playoff time.
    5. Cleveland Indians (63-52): With ongoing worries over Jason Kipnis' health added to Michael Brantley going to the DL, the Indians were wise to grab Jay Bruce from the Mets to reinforce a lineup that has yet to really hit on all cylinders. Until that happens, starting pitching has sustained the Indians' hold on first place in the AL Central, reflected in their AL-best 3.21 ERA since the break.
