NFL Power Rankings (Last Updated: 09/21)
1. Atlanta Falcons (2-0):
Week 2 ranking: No. 7;
Falcons fans can drop any concerns about Steve Sarkisian running the offense. FPI has the Falcons as the second-rated
offense so far this season, and Matt Ryan is averaging nearly 10 yards per pass attempt. The Falcons are just the fourth
Super Bowl loser to start the next season 2-0.
2. Kansas City Chiefs (2-0):
Week 2 ranking: No. 3;
The Chiefs were expected to be a playoff team at the start of the season, but Kareem Hunt might have Chiefs fans
aiming even higher. Hunt's five scrimmage touchdowns are tied for second most by a player through his first two NFL games.
3. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-0):
Week 2 ranking: No. 1;
Le'Veon Bell might be off to a slow start, but the other Steeler B's aren't. Ben Roethlisberger has completed
21 passes for 16 yards per catch to Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant this season. Pittsburgh is off to a 2-0 start
for the second straight year.
4. New England Patriots (1-1):
Week 2 ranking: No. 4;
Tom Brady reminded everyone in Week 2 that he is still, in fact, Tom Brady, and that alone is reason for
optimism. But another reason for optimism is the Patriots' stable of running backs, who have combined for a
league-best 385 yards from scrimmage this season. James White, Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead are all producing early on.
5. Oakland Raiders (2-0):
Week 2 ranking: No. 6;
The Raiders have two wins, have yet to turn the ball over and have the best point differential through two games
(plus-35). If the Raiders keep that up, there will be plenty more dancing for Marshawn Lynch this season.
CFB Power Rankings (Last Updated: 09/21)
1. Clemson (3-0):
Kelly Bryant led an offense that accounted for more than 600 yards against Louisville. The defense is frightening.
The Tigers have slogged through a Sugar Bowl team and Heisman winner from 2016. They look like the best team in the
2. Alabama (3-0):
Nick Saban got everything done he wanted out of an easy win over Colorado State. Jalen Hurts ran for 100 yards.
Tua Tagovailoa got his designated snaps. Through three games, the defense has taken it away six times. Bama hasn't
turned it over. Vandy next.
3. Oklahoma (3-0):
We'd like to tell you more about the Sooners, but their game against Tulane was on pay-per-view. That, apparently,
is still a thing. We'll assume there was no letdown from Ohio State.
4. Penn State (3-0):
The Nits have allowed one touchdown in three games, tying for the national lead. We'll admit they haven't played much
of anyone (Sorry, Pittsburgh.) It looks like Penn State will keep rolling until at least an Oct. 21 home game
5. Southern California (3-0):
Either Texas is better than we thought or the Trojans are not. How about both? Tom Herman's defense rose up to frustrate
Sam Darnold, who is tied for the second-most interceptions in the country (six).
MLB Power Rankings (Last Updated: 09/21)
2. Los Angeles Dodgers (96-53):
Week 23 ranking: No. 4;
Now that the Dodgers' epic tumble after their sizzling summer is over, let's keep things in perspective. They're still
a virtual lock to win 100 games. Yes, Justin Turner has cooled off from hitting .377 in the first half, but his .830 OPS
in the second half isn't chopped liver. Cody Bellinger is hitting even better in the second half (.985 vs. .961 OPS), as
are Yasiel Puig and Chris Taylor. Nobody should look forward to facing a team with that lineup and Clayton Kershaw and
Yu Darvish on the mound in a short series.
3. Houston Astros (91-58):
Week 23 ranking: No. 2;
With an 11-5 run in September to clinch the franchise's first AL West title, the Astros look like they're swinging back
into high gear for the stretch. Doing that wasn't a cake walk -- they swept the Mariners twice and took a series from the
Angels to put big dents in both team's wild-card hopes. Dallas Keuchel's quality start Saturday against Seattle should
also provide hope that the best team in baseball in the season's first two months is ready to live up to the hype that
4. Washington Nationals (90-59):
Week 23 ranking: No. 3;
Max Scherzer indicated that he is still working off the rust from his two-week DL stint in August, and that's evident
in his inconsistency. Scherzer's fastball and slider numbers were good in a start against the Phillies, but sandwiched
around that were signs of struggle against the Brewers and Braves. His fastball velocity averaged 93 mph, a tick shy
of his season average. The chase rate against his slider in those two starts was about half of his season average.
Scherzer has three starts to get things right; I suspect that he will.
5. Boston Red Sox (85-64):
Week 23 ranking: No. 6;
The Red Sox have managed to stay on top of the division despite the Yankees' being one of the hottest teams in baseball
this month. Mookie Betts has been on fire in September, and Dustin Pedroia is hitting over .300 since he got back into
the lineup. Boston has a tougher schedule than New York down the stretch, but if the Sox's studs keep hitting and Chris
Sale keeps doing Chris Sale things, the Red Sox should be just fine.
