NFL Power Rankings (Last Updated: 01/04, Season Final)
1. New England Patriots,
2017 record: 13-3
Week 17 ranking: No. 1
Opponent winning percentage: .484; 10th-easiest. There are plenty of fans who will point to the relative ease of New England's schedule for
the Patriots' 13-3 season. But they went 6-2 against teams who finished with a winning record, which included wins over the playoff-bound
Steelers, Saints and Falcons.
2. Pittsburgh Steelers,
2017 record: 13-3
Week 17 ranking: No. 2
Opponent winning percentage: .453; fourth-easiest. Don't attribute the Steelers' 13-3 season entirely to their relatively easy schedule.
Pittsburgh went 6-2 against teams who finished with a winning record, tied for the most such wins in the NFL (Patriots).
3. Minnesota Vikings,
2017 record: 13-3
Week 17 ranking: No. 3
Opponent winning percentage: .492; tied for the 12th-easiest. The Vikings' schedule trended on the easier side, but look at how other teams
did with backup quarterbacks this season (see: Packers, Texans, Colts and Dolphins). The Minnesota defense allowed the fewest points, but
Case Keenum also finished second in Total QBR.
4. New Orleans Saints,
2017 record: 11-5
Week 17 ranking: No. 6
Opponent winning percentage: .535; eighth-hardest. The Saints played one of the toughest schedules in the NFL and held their own. Not
only did they win the NFC South, but they posted a plus-57 point margin against winning teams, the second-best in the NFL.
5. Los Angeles Rams,
2017 record: 11-5
Week 17 ranking: No. 4
Opponent winning percentage: .504; 15th-hardest. The Rams finished first in scoring after finishing last in 2016, becoming just the second team
to complete that turnaround according to the Elias Sports Bureau (the first was the 1965 49ers). What makes that even more impressive is the
Rams played a group of opponents who finished the season above .500.
NBA Power Rankings (Last Updated: 01/17)
1. Celtics (34-11):
Between Kyrie Irving and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics might be more interesting for what they do off the court than on the court. The Celtics are
fine to watch, but sometimes they opt to just squeeze teams into submission and the basketball gets ugly. A win is a win, though, and that's
why they're the hottest team in the NBA.
2. Warriors (36-9):
Stephen Curry is back in the lineup and finally all the Warriors' key pieces are healthy at the same time. They survived a scare against the
Raptors, but in that same game they led at halftime 81-54. It's terrifying what this team can do at full strength.
3. Timberwolves (29-17):
Karl-Anthony Towns defense has risen to another level and it's a big part of why the Wolves are playing their best basketball of the season.
The Knicks were the first team to break 100 against them since Dec. 27.
4. Raptors (29-13):
Toronto lost Kyle Lowry for a brief period of time due to a tailbone bruise, but luckily they have DeMar DeRozan and he's been balling out
of his mind. DeRozan has scored 35-plus points four times just this January, including a 50-point effort on New Year's Day, which has some
people wondering why he's not getting MVP consideration.
5. Rockets (30-12):
No James Harden? No problem, says Chris Paul. The Point God has picked up plenty of the scoring slack in his place and he's done so in Houston's
quick fast paced offense. This isn't the slow-it-down Paul of the past.
CBA Power Rankings (Last Updated: 01/17)
1. Villanova Wildcats,
Last week: 1
For the first time in a few weeks, No. 1 stays the same. Villanova established its credentials as the clear Big East favorite with a 24-point
home win over Xavier and then struggled before beating St. John's on the road. Sixth man extraordinaire Donte DiVincenzo has now scored double
figures in eight consecutive games.
2. Purdue Boilermakers,
Last week: 3
Is this the new Big Ten favorite? The Boilermakers have won 13 in a row since losing two in the Bahamas, and thanks to Michigan State's struggles
the past two weekends, sit atop the league standings with Ohio State. Aside from the Michigan State game, Purdue's remaining road games are all
against likely bottom-half Big Ten teams.
3. Virginia Cavaliers,
Last week: 5
Virginia is now 5-0 in the ACC after handling Syracuse and NC State at home, but four of the Cavaliers' first five league games have been at
home. Now, they head on the road for five of their next seven. Isaiah Wilkins continues to cement himself as one of the best defenders in
the country, holding Omer Yurtseven to six points one week after limiting Luke Maye to the same.
4. Oklahoma Sooners,
Last week: 7
Strong bounce-back week for Lon Kruger's team, knocking off Texas Tech and TCU after the loss at West Virginia. We've talked in the past about
Trae Young needing help in big games; Christian James had 15 points against Tech, while Brady Manek went for 22 against TCU.
5. West Virginia Mountaineers,
Last week: 2
We're not going to dock the Mountaineers too much for losing their first game since Nov. 10 -- on the road, by one point, against a top-10 team.
One big positive was Esa Ahmad's performance in his first game back from suspension, going for 18 points and six rebounds. Keep an eye on any
ramifications from the court-rush incident, though.
